Reading the edge
What fin rot looks like
Fin rot is a bacterial infection, generally by opportunistic gram negative bacteria that are present in every aquarium and normally held in check by a healthy immune system. It takes hold when something lowers that defense: poor water quality, chronic stress, cold water, or an existing wound.
It starts at the outer margin and works inward. The classic presentation is a darkened edge, black, brown, or reddish, above tissue that looks frayed and uneven rather than cut. As it progresses the fin appears to melt, getting visibly shorter over days. Advanced cases show redness and inflammation where the fin meets the body, and at that point the infection is no longer confined to fin tissue.
A useful early clue is distribution. Injury tends to be one event in one place. Rot tends to show along a whole margin, or on more than one fin at once.
What mechanical damage looks like
A tear is an injury, and it looks like one: a straight rip or a smooth curved gap, with normal color right up to the break. It appears suddenly, often between one evening and the next morning, and then it stops. There is no fraying, no discoloration, and no progression.
The causes are almost always in the tank. Sharp or rough decorations and stiff plastic plants are the usual culprits, which is why we recommend smooth decor and silk or live plants. A filter with too strong an outflow shreds long fins over time, and can be baffled rather than removed. Fish jump, and an unlidded tank turns that into an injury. What fin biting looks like
Self biting produces clean edged damage like a tear, but with a signature: chunks taken out of the caudal fin, often scooped or half moon shaped, sometimes roughly matching on both sides. It appears overnight, stays put, and then happens again a week later. Damage that keeps recurring on a fish in clean water, with no rot signs, is usually the fish itself. The two cases where the edge tells you nothing
This is where the standard advice quietly fails, and it fails often enough that it deserves its own heading.
Your fish is red, black, or dark. The whole tell is a dark or reddish margin against normal color. On a red betta, a reddish edge is just the fish. On a black or heavily marbled fish, a black edge is just the fish. Keepers of dark fish routinely cannot use this marker at all, and no amount of better lighting fixes it. The edge is pale, white, or clear. This is the most misread sign in the hobby, because it points both ways. New fin tissue grows in clear or milky, thin and fragile, so a whitish edge is one of the standard signs of healing. But fin rot can also present with a white margin, and a fungal component produces a whitish edge as well. A pale edge on its own is genuinely ambiguous. Anyone who tells you it definitely means one or the other is guessing, and half the time they are guessing wrong.
The test that actually settles it: direction, not appearance
Rot removes tissue. Regrowth adds it. Injury does neither after the moment it happens. That difference is invisible in a single look and obvious over two days, which makes it the most reliable diagnostic available to a keeper without a microscope.
Do this:
- Photograph the fish today, from the side, with the fin spread if you can catch it. Get something fixed in frame for scale: a heater, a plant, a mark on the glass.
- Note where the damaged margin sits relative to that reference.
- Photograph again in 48 hours, from the same angle and the same distance.
- Compare. Margin moved toward the body means the fin is getting shorter, which means active rot. Margin unchanged means injury, and it is healing on its own schedule. Margin extended outward, with a thin clear film at the tip, means regrowth.
Two days is long enough to see movement and short enough that you have not lost time if it turns out to be rot. If the fish is also lethargic, clamped, or off its food, do not wait the two days to fix the water. Fix the water immediately and use the photographs to tell you whether the fins are still losing ground.
Why “which one is it” is often the wrong question
The comparison format implies the two are alternatives. Frequently they are stages of the same story.
A tear is an open wound. The bacteria that cause fin rot are already in the water. In a well maintained tank the fish closes that wound without incident, which is why an isolated tear on a healthy betta in good water genuinely needs nothing but time. In a tank with detectable ammonia, or sitting below the right temperature, that same wound is an entry point, and what began as a snag on a plastic plant becomes an infection within a week.
So the more useful question is not which one you are looking at. It is whether the water is good enough that it does not matter. If it is, a tear heals and rot does not start. If it is not, you are going to end up treating rot regardless of how the damage began. That is also why the first move is the same either way.
What to do, in order
Correct the environment before you reach for medication. This is the single highest impact thing you can do and it is the step people skip on the way to the fish medicine aisle. Correcting water and temperature resolves most stress related problems by itself, and medicating without correcting the environment usually fails, or helps briefly and then relapses, because the medication does not remove the cause.
First, test. Ammonia and nitrite should read 0 ppm and nitrate should sit under 20 ppm. Any ammonia or nitrite above zero is doing damage, and on a fish with an open wound or an active infection it is doing that damage faster. If you do not have a liquid test kit, this is the moment to get one, because everything below depends on knowing the numbers rather than guessing them.
Second, change water. If ammonia or nitrite are detectable, change half to three quarters of the volume now, matched to tank temperature and treated with a conditioner that neutralizes chlorine and chloramine. Retest and repeat until both read zero. If the numbers were already fine, a routine change of about a quarter to a third of the volume is enough.
Third, check temperature. The target is 78 to 80 degrees F, with 76 to 82 acceptable. Below 74 the immune system is working at a disadvantage, and a fish fighting a bacterial infection in cold water is fighting with one hand tied. Confirm with a thermometer rather than trusting a heater dial.
Fourth, remove the cause. If it is mechanical, find what cut the fish. Run a bare hand or a stocking over every decoration; anything that catches will catch a fin. Baffle a strong filter outflow. Replace stiff plastic plants with silk or live ones.
Fifth, and only then, consider medication. Give environmental correction a day or two before medicating, unless the condition is visibly worsening fast, in which case do both together. If you do move to treatment, a hospital tank makes it controllable: small, around 2.5 to 5 gallons, heated to roughly 78 degrees F, gently aerated, bare with no substrate or plants, and given large daily water changes.
When this is not just the fins
Ragged fins with a normal, active, hungry fish is a fin problem. Ragged fins alongside any of the following is an emergency and the fins are the least of it: gasping at the surface, lying motionless on the substrate, scales standing out from the body like a pine cone, cotton like growth, or rapid loss of color.
One condition deserves specific mention because it is mistaken for fin rot constantly and it kills fast. How fins heal, and what to expect
The first sign of success is not improvement. It is the absence of further loss. A margin that has stopped advancing is the treatment working, even though the fin still looks terrible. Judge the first few days on whether the damage is spreading, not on whether it looks better.
After that, new tissue appears at the edge as a thin, clear or milky film, fragile enough to tear again easily. It fills in with color over time, and often not the original color. Regrowth is slow, measured in weeks to months rather than days, and it is faster in clean, stable, warm water than in anything else. Severely damaged fins may never return to their original shape, and a fish that has lost a lot of fin can be perfectly healthy for years with fins that never look the same.

Preventing the next one
Nearly all of this is downstream of water and environment, which is the good news, because that is the part you control.
- Test weekly rather than reacting to symptoms.
- Partial water changes on a schedule, with a conditioner that handles chlorine and chloramine.
- A properly cycled tank, at a minimum of 5 gallons, with 10 or more preferred. Small volumes swing fast, and swings are the stress that opens the door.
- Stable heat in the target range, confirmed with a thermometer.
- Fine sand or smooth gravel, no sharp decorations, silk or live plants over stiff plastic.
- A gentle sponge filter, or a stronger one baffled down.
