Buying a betta online means trusting a stranger to put a live animal in a box and ship it across the country. The fish you see in the photo and the fish that arrives are not always the same fish, the seller’s “live arrival guarantee” may mean far less than it sounds, and the seller who looks best on their own website is often not the one buyers actually trust. This page is about cutting through that.

Before you pick a seller, get these four things right
The seller matters less than most buyers think. These four decisions decide whether your fish arrives healthy more than the brand name does.
Shipping season beats shipping speed. A healthy fish shipped in a Florida July and a healthy fish shipped in a Minnesota January are not the same bet. Heat and cold in transit kill more fish than bad sellers do. If you’re ordering into temperature extremes, the single most useful thing you can do is contact the seller and confirm heat-pack or cold-pack handling for your specific route before you order.
Read the live arrival guarantee like a contract, because it is one. Most guarantees have a claim window measured in hours, require photos of the fish in the sealed, unopened bag, and pay out in store credit rather than cash. A guarantee that sounds generous on the homepage often has teeth only the seller benefits from. Know the window and the documentation rule before you buy, not after a fish arrives dead.
A quarantine tank is part of the cost of buying online. Disease on arrival, especially ich, is common enough across sellers that a separate quarantine tank isn’t optional. Budget for it the way you budget for the fish.
Do the all-in math. A $15 betta is rarely a $15 purchase. Minimum-order requirements, overnight shipping, and add-ons routinely push a single betta past $90 delivered. Sometimes that’s worth it for a specific fish. Often it means you’re better off with a seller built around bettas rather than one where bettas are an afterthought.
