Aquarium Salt vs Epsom Salt for Bettas

They are different chemicals and they are not interchangeable. Aquarium salt is sodium chloride, used for external problems like parasites and damaged fins. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, used for internal swelling and constipation. Buying the wrong one is easy, because the shopping results for both are a mess.

We went and looked at what is actually on sale. On 26 July 2026 we captured 37 listings across seven retailers, along with every result the two products return on Google. The chemistry below is the easy part. What the aisle does to a buyer is the part nobody writes about.

What each one actually is

Aquarium salt is sodium chloride. The same compound as table salt, without the iodine and anti-caking agents, sold in a carton with a fish on it. It works osmotically at the fish’s skin and gills, which is why its uses are external: parasites, damaged fins, slime coat support, and protection against nitrite toxicity while a tank is cycling. That last one has the clearest mechanism of anything salt does. A fish’s gills absorb nitrite through the same channels they use to take up chloride, and cannot tell the two ions apart, so raising chloride in the water crowds nitrite out of the pathway. It is why marine fish rarely suffer nitrite poisoning.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. It contains no sodium at all, so calling it a salt is a naming accident rather than a chemical relationship. It works osmotically too, but in a different place and in the opposite direction: as a saline laxative, pulling water into the digestive tract to soften and move a blockage, and drawing fluid out of swollen tissue. Both the Walmart and Target labels state saline laxative as the product’s stated purpose. That is why its uses are internal: constipation, bloating, swim bladder trouble, and swelling.

That is the whole rule. External problem, sodium chloride. Internal problem, magnesium sulfate. Substituting one for the other does not give you a weaker version of the right treatment. It gives you a different treatment for a problem the fish does not have.

The mistake the manufacturer warns about and almost nobody repeats

Aquarium salt does not evaporate and is not removed by a filter. Water leaves the tank. The salt stays. This is printed in API’s own directions on the PetSmart listing, which tells you to add salt only with each water change, and it is the single most consequential thing on this page.

Here is how people get it wrong. You dose a 5 gallon tank. A week later the water level has dropped, so you top it off. Now the same amount of salt is dissolved in less water, so the concentration is higher than you set it. Then you do a water change and dose the full tank volume again, forgetting that most of the original salt never left. Repeat that for a month and the fish is living in water considerably saltier than anything you intended, with no obvious moment where you made a mistake.

The corrections are simple. Top off evaporation with plain dechlorinated water and no salt at all. When you change water, replace only the salt that went out with the water you removed, not a fresh dose for the whole tank. And when treatment is finished, remove the salt with a series of plain water changes rather than waiting for it to go away, because it will not.

The same applies to Epsom. Neither compound leaves on its own.

Bath, dip, or the whole tank

A low maintenance dose of aquarium salt is commonly run in the display tank. Higher treatment doses, and Epsom salt in particular, are better handled as a short bath in a separate container.

The reason is specific rather than general caution. Magnesium is one of the two minerals general hardness measures, so dosing Epsom into a display tank does not only treat the fish, it raises the tank’s GH. Magnesium sulfate does not evaporate either, so that shift stays until water changes carry it out. A bath treats the fish and then ends, leaving your water chemistry where you set it. Keepers do dose Epsom in the main tank and it is not reckless, but the separate container is the lower risk default and it is where we would start.

What the shopping results actually show you

This is where a buyer gets hurt, and it is not covered anywhere else we could find.

Searching for aquarium salt mostly returns saltwater tank mix

Marine salt mix and freshwater aquarium salt are different products for different tanks. Marine mix recreates ocean water for reef systems. Putting it in a betta tank is not a dosing error, it is the wrong ocean.

On the query aquarium salt, the organic results are fine: five of the eight are genuinely freshwater aquarium salt. The commercial surfaces are where it falls apart. Across the sponsored tiles, the product grids, and the in-stores-nearby module, we counted 35 marine salt mix listings against 21 freshwater ones. The third product grid contained seven marine tiles and a pond product, with no freshwater aquarium salt in it at all.

It is not fixed by being more specific, either. On aquarium salt for betta, a query naming a freshwater fish, marine mix still appeared seven times.

The results for Epsom salt do not know fish exist

Search epsom salt for fish and the sponsored carousel returns three tiles, none of which are Epsom salt. The first one is API Freshwater Aquarium Salt, which is sodium chloride: precisely the wrong chemical, served to a person who searched for the right one by name. The Amazon text ad on the same query runs body copy about shampoos, soaps and loofahs.

The retailer shelves are no better. Of the Epsom listings we captured at Walmart, more contained additives than did not. Eucalyptus and spearmint, lavender, added potassium and zinc, essential oils, a foaming formulation, and a coconut oil version priced at $5.87, identical to its plain siblings, with nothing on the listing to tell you that putting an oil in an aquarium is a bad idea. Two products in those results were not Epsom salt at all: one was magnesium chloride, and one was a topical rub.

Not one Epsom salt page we looked at mentioned fish. You are shopping in the bath aisle, and the bath aisle is not thinking about your betta.

Buying by brand costs you money and information

On Chewy, SunGrow sells a betta branded aquarium salt at $6.99 for 16 ounces. The API carton on the same site, same size, same chemical, is $5.48. That is a dollar fifty for the word betta on the bag. The SunGrow page then gives an instructions panel containing a procedure and no dose: no tablespoons, no teaspoons, no gallons anywhere on the listing.

Marketplace listings are worse. Walmart carried the same 33 ounce API carton at $12.55 that Petco and Chewy both sold for $8.78, and a third party seller listed the 16 ounce carton at $10.00, which works out to 63 cents an ounce against 20 cents an ounce for the large carton at Chewy. Same shelf category, same chemical, roughly triple the price.

What to buy, and what it costs

Aquarium salt. Buy the plain generic carton and buy the large size. The API 65 ounce carton was $12.48 at Chewy and Pet Supermarket, which was the cheapest per ounce in the whole capture. The 16 ounce carton was $5.48 at Petco and Chewy. You will not use it quickly, and it does not spoil. Ignore anything with a fish breed on the label.

Epsom salt. Buy the plainest, most medical looking bag in the pharmacy aisle and read the ingredients. Walmart’s Equate unscented was $3.78 for 64 ounces and states magnesium sulfate USP as both the ingredient and the active ingredient. Target’s up and up was $3.69 for 4 pounds and carries a full drug facts panel, which makes it the best labelled product of either type we found.

Two things follow from that. The plain product is the cheap one: Dr Teal’s fragrance free worked out to 7.8 cents an ounce while its eucalyptus and spearmint version was 12.2 cents. The product that would harm your fish is the one you pay extra for. And Epsom salt is roughly a quarter the price of aquarium salt per ounce, because you are buying it in the aisle where it is a commodity rather than the aisle where it is a pet product.

Worth noticing: none of the aquarium salt listings we captured stated an ingredient list, a purity grade, or a USP designation. The pharmacy Epsom did. The product sold specifically for putting into water with a living animal is less well specified than the product sold for a bath. Why every dose you find is different

Page one for Epsom salt currently carries doses ranging from an eighth of a teaspoon per five gallons up to a full tablespoon per gallon. That is a hundredfold spread, on the same page of results, for the same purpose. The competing sources include forum threads from 2012 and 2003.

We are not going to add a forty-first number to that pile. The defensible instruction is to follow the dose printed on the product you actually bought, because that is the only dose written by someone who knows the granule size and density of what is in the carton. API’s cartons state one rounded tablespoon per 5 gallons, or half a rounded teaspoon per gallon, and that appears identically across Petco, PetSmart and Chewy.

Two honest gaps. Target’s API listing carried no dosing information at all, so if you buy there you are buying a product whose instructions you cannot read before purchase. And you cannot calculate cost per treatment for aquarium salt from anything published: the label doses by volume in rounded tablespoons, the package sells by weight in ounces, and no listing states a density. Target’s Epsom page is the exception, giving 495 mg of magnesium per five gram teaspoon, which is the only conversion published anywhere in the set.

On combining the two, experienced keepers disagree. Some use them together at a split dose, others consider that a bad idea. There is no settled answer, and anyone presenting one is overstating what is known.

What salt does not fix

Neither salt addresses why the fish got sick. Most betta illness starts with an environmental stressor, and correcting water quality and temperature resolves the majority of it without anything else. Salt added to a tank with detectable ammonia is a treatment layered on top of an ongoing injury.

So before either carton comes out: test, and expect ammonia at 0 ppm, nitrite at 0 ppm, and nitrate under 20 ppm. Change water if they are not. Confirm the temperature sits between 78 and 80 degrees F. Then decide whether you have an external problem or an internal one. If you cannot tell which, that is the question to answer first, not something to resolve by dosing both.

Specifically on dropsy, where Epsom salt is most often recommended: the pineconed appearance is a symptom of severe internal failure, frequently of the kidneys, rather than a disease in itself. Epsom can reduce the fluid buildup and make the fish more comfortable. It is not treating the cause, and the outlook is poor regardless. When not to use salt at all

  • Live plants. Most aquarium plants are salt intolerant. API’s own label carries this caution. Treat in a separate container instead.
  • Snails and shrimp. Invertebrates tolerate salt poorly.
  • Scaleless tankmates. Corydoras, loaches, and similar fish are markedly more sensitive than scaled species.
  • As a permanent addition. Freshwater fish are not built to process continuously elevated sodium. Salt is a treatment with a start and an end, not a supplement.
  • Table salt, ever. Iodine and anti-caking agents are harmful. If a recipe calls for aquarium salt, use aquarium salt.
  • Scented, dyed, or oiled Epsom. Fragrances and essential oils are toxic to fish and oils foul the water. Read the bag.
